02 The Many Faces of HTML5

May 18th, 2010 - Tyler and Peter dive into the details of HTML5, exploring what’s possible today with CSS3, HTML5 Video, Audio & Canvas, and what we can look forward to in the future. Included is a discussion of David Arno’s recent article arguing against the move HTML5 and Lee Brimelow’s suggestion that Flash is built for touch. This week’s WebVisions conference is also discussed, as well as the demise of music service Lala.

As Peter promised, here is the the Rotating Planet Canvas Demo. In a supported browser (Firefox, Chrome, or Safari), CPU usage should spike considerably.

  1. You guys mentioned David Arno and his “HTML5 must not become the future of the web”. He just posted up a new post touching on more of why JavaScript is inherently flawed:

Why JavaScript is a toy langage

I think his assessment of the language is valid, in that it has a weird object model, contains a large portion of features that are rather unpleasant or useless, and it’s mostly defended because we’re stuck with.

Calling it a “toy language” seems a little ridiculous, as there’s still a lot of power in it. Yeah, there’s no type safety and you can’t sign it, but in most environments with good coding practices and no XSS, your script will work well and run whatever you throw at it. And with abstractions like jQuery, it does it faster and better. Doesn’t really sound like a toy to me.

Again, I love David Arno’s evocative post titles! I’m glad there’s a lot of thoughtfulness behind his rabble-rousing.

JavaScript may be a “toy” in the landscape of programming languages, but in the context of the Web it’s one of our most powerful tools.

David’s pontifications regarding its apparent idiocy are good for the Web. His and others’ critical comments may very well steer our medium’s future. But I’m glad we still have folks like John Resig working to harness its potential to benefit our users in the here and now.
